In 2010, the Library of Congress announced that cell phone owners can legally unlock, or in the case of the iPhone, jailbreak their phones. This means you can unlock your phone and use it on almost any network or travel outside of your home country without fear of a high phone bill. You will save money over time because you are not locked into a lengthy contract with a carrier. Although the Nokia 5200 has been discontinued, you can still unlock your phone by requesting a code from your carrier or purchasing a code online.
Instructions
1. Enter *#06# on the main screen of your Nokia 5200. The IMEI number will appear across your phone's home screen. Write down the 15- digit number.
2. Call your mobile provider for an unlock code. In some cases a carrier will provide an unlock code if you are a current customer in good standing for at least three months. If the carrier does not give you a code, you may purchase a code from Mobile Unlock Solutions or Cellunlocker.net using your IMEI number.
3. Turn your phone off and push the release button to remove the back cover. Gently pull the battery outward to remove it. Open the SIM card holder and remove the SIM card. Insert the battery and reattach the battery cover.
4. Turn your phone on without the SIM card. Ignore the message on your home screen.
5. Enter #pw+code+1#; enter #pw+code+7# for a phone locked to the Fido or Rogers network in Canada. "SIM Restriction Off" will appear on your home screen, indicating your phone is unlocked.
