The UIC dental program awards more than half the dental degrees from Illinois.
The College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago offers a number of different programs: Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), International Dentist Degree Program (IDDP), Ph.D. in Oral Sciences and specialty certification in endodontics, dental surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. Admissions and graduation requirements vary for each program. All programs, including the IDDP, require students to be citizens or legal residents of the U.S.
Doctor of Dental Medicine
DMD applicants must hold a bachelor's degree that includes at least 14 hours of chemistry (a minimum of four of those in organic chemistry), six hours of biology, six hours of English and six hours of physics with a minimum grade "C" in each. Students must submit Dental Admission Test scores, three letters of recommendation, the completed application forms and appropriate fees. Qualified applicants then receive an interview. The program consists of 11 courses and clinical practice.
International Dental Degree Program
The International Dental Degree Program (IDDP) allows applicants who possess a dental degree from another country to get U.S. licensing through this two-year program. In addition to the UIC application materials, students in the IDDP program must submit the American Dental Education Association Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists, proof of residency status, National Board Part I scores, TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) scores, a copy of the foreign degree, transcripts and transcript evaluation and two letters of recommendation.
Ph.D.
Students wishing to focus more on research can obtain a Ph.D. in Oral Sciences. Candidates must score above the 50th percentile on the Graduate Record Examination, hold an approved bachelor's degree, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for post-bachelor's school, and submit three letters of reference and a statement of personal interest. National Dental Board scores may be required for students currently enrolled in a dental program, and some may need to interview with a campus committee. The program typically takes four to five years to complete.
General Requirements
The College of Dentistry requires certain standards of conduct for students. Students are expected to follow the dress code and maintain professional appearance and comply with safety regulations during clinical work. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA. The college reserves the right to dismiss students whose grades put them on academic probation for more than one semester, who fail the National Board Examination Part I twice, or break any rules of conduct.
