Edit An Mp3 For A Ringtone

Edit MP3 files to create custom ringtones for your cellular phone.

If you're tired of the preset ringtones included with your cellular phone, you can transfer your own custom ringtones from your computer. Most cellular phones support MP3 files, which store CD-quality audio in a compressed digital file. Convert your favorite song to MP3 format and then use audio-editing software to edit the file before transferring it to your cellular phone. You can shorten an MP3 file, adjust its volume and add special effects such as reverb and delay.

Instructions

1. Download Audacity. This freeware audio-editing program edits MP3, FLAC, WAV and other audio file formats. Click "File" and "Open" to select the MP3 file you want to edit. Click "Effects" to apply special effects to the track, including delay, noise removal and bass boost. Click "Analyze" to determine and change the tempo of the MP3 file. Use the "Volume" slide bar to raise or lower the file's volume. Audacity's "Cut" and "Paste" capabilities let you shorten, split and combine MP3 files.

2. Use MediaCoder. This freeware media transcoder handles video and audio files. It supports a range of audio file formats, including MP3, WAV, WMA, AIFF, FLAC and Ogg Vorbis. Click "Add" and select the MP3 file. You also can drag and drop MP3 files directly into the program's "File Name" window. Click the "Time" tab to shorten or split the audio file. You can enter the exact minute and second where you want the MP3 cut or split. Use the "Gain" drop-down menu under the "Audio" tab to increase or reduce the track's volume. You also can re-encode the MP3 file to reduce the amount of space it will use on your cellular phone.

3. Install mp3DirectCut. This freeware program supports recording and editing of MP3 files. Click "File" and "Open" to select the MP3 file you want to edit for use as a ringtone. Click "Play" to preview the MP3 audio file. Click "Set Begin" during playback to mark the point where you want to cut the file and click "Set End" to mark the point where you want the track to end. Click "Cut" to cut the highlighted selection of the track. Click "Edit" and then "Normalize" to adjust the MP3's volume. You also can use the "Fade" option under the "Special" menu to fade the MP3 track's volume in and out.
