Unlocking a cell phone means one of two things.
Phones that are locked can mean one of two things. Locked phones can indicate that the phone itself locks the number pad, so the user cannot use the dials. The user can utilize this function if she has her phone in her pocket, so the phone does not dial random numbers. The second option means that the phone is locked to a specific service provider, meaning that the cell phone cannot be used with other service providers. Users can unlock themselves from their service providers after their contracts are done.
Instructions
Unlock the Number Pad
1. Click any button on the number pad. The phone will display instructions on unlock the number pad.
2. Follow the instructions on the phone to unlock the phone. Some phones require a password or PIN number and other phones require only a simple combination of various symbols or buttons.
3. Know your phone's default password to unlock your number pad. While some companies use "1, 2, 3," others use "1, 1, 1, 1" or "1, 2, 3, 4." Know this default code in case you do not know your password or PIN number.
Unlock Phone from Service Provider
4. Contact your phone service provider to learn if you are eligible to unlock your cell phone. If your contract with the phone service provider has been completed, for example, you can get your phone unlocked.
5. Pay any fees that may be in order. While your service provider may unlock your phone for free under certain circumstances (such after your contract has been fulfilled) other providers (or circumstances) may require a fee for unlocking your phone for you.
6. Follow the instructions your phone service provider asks you to do to complete the unlocking of the phone. When the unlocking is complete, you can use the phone with any SIM card from various service providers.
