Troubleshoot A Nokia N81

Basic troubleshooting skills can help you get the most out of your N81.

The Nokia N81 is a slide phone featuring an integrated camera, Bluetooth and 8GB of memory. The phone is also suited for gamers, as it supports Nokia's N-Gage games. As with all technology, however, it is prone to several errors. Many hardware issues are difficult to solve, perhaps requiring professional consultation; however, you can generally resolve software issues with a basic fix.

Instructions

General Fix

1. Switch your N81 off. The power button is located atop the N81 to the right-hand side.

2. Remove the battery. This is underneath the back panel. Simply press the release button on the underside, to the back edge.

3. Wait about 20 seconds before reinserting the battery and turning on the phone again.

4. Press the "Menu" key on the bottom left of the four-way navigational key. Scroll to "Tools," select it, then go to "Settings." You need to reset your phone's factory settings as part of the general fix.

5. Select "General" from the "Settings" menu. Highlight it and select "Factory Settings." None of your data will be affected --- only the N81's settings. The theory is that if an option has been accidentally changed, it may prevent your phone from working properly.

6. Enter your "Lock Code." If you have never heard of a "Lock Code," you probably haven't changed it, so enter "12345." If you have changed it, enter your personal lock code. If you can't remember it, try "12345" anyway, because it is the default code.

7. Enter the code "*#0000#" (no quotation marks) into the default or "Standby" screen. Select "Options" and then "Check for Updates." This will update your N81's software. This ensures that outdated software is not causing any issues. It is a good idea to regularly update your phone, and you can also do this through your PC by downloading the "Nokia Software Updater" (see Resources).

8. Restart your phone once the update is complete. Realize this may take longer than usual as a result of the changes you have made.

Short Battery Life

9. Check that Bluetooth is not active. Many leave it turned on all the time and this is very detrimental to battery life. If you want to conserve battery, only switch Bluetooth on when needed.

10. Press and hold the "Menu" button. This brings up a list of active applications on your N81.

11. Select any programs you are not using and end the process with the "C" button, located across from the "Menu" button. Having processes running you are not using expends battery power unnecessarily, and is best avoided if you want to prolong battery life.

12. Refrain from excessively long phone conversations. Though calling is the primary function of the N81, as with all phones, talk time consumes considerable battery.
