Most of the PowerShot's settings can be reset.
You can reset several of the attributes on a Canon PowerShot A710 IS. The process can be useful when you need to remove user personalization for shooting or selling purposes. All of the reset options can be accessed by pressing the "Menu" button when the camera is on, while you are looking at the LCD display.
Resetting the Default Settings
Resetting the camera settings to default will return the camera to the state it was in when it was opened from the box. Any custom settings, such as auto focus, zoom and image size, will be lost. This procedure can be useful if you purposely or accidentally changed many settings, which resulted in the camera being unsatisfactory to use.
To reset settings to default, remove the memory card from the camera. Navigate to the "Reset All" option within the main menu. Press the "Set" button.
Resetting the File Number
The A710 offers two file numbering systems: continuous and auto reset. In continuous mode, all photos will be numbered within the context of the camera's lifetime. For example, if the camera has taken 500 photos, the next photo will be labeled 501. In auto reset mode, this number will reset each time a blank memory card is inserted. This function can be useful between periods of shooting to keep track of when each period begins and ends.
To switch to auto reset numbering, navigate to the "File Numbering" option within the main menu .Push the "Set" button. Use the left and right arrows to select between the two options. Press "Set" to apply the change. Insert a blank memory card to start numbering from 1.
Format the Memory Card
For a true reset of the camera, format the memory card as well. Formatting a card erases all the data on a card and initializes it for use by the camera again. The deleted data will not be able to be undone. This procedure, along with the steps in Section 1, will return the camera to its out-of-the-box state, with no settings or data.
To format, navigate to the "Format" option within the main menu. Press the "Set" button. Press "OK" to start the format.
