Change From F1 To H2b

Switch from a F-1 to an H-2B visa to take a seasonal job.

Studying and having fun occupies many a student's time. Working at a job also makes up part of college life for some students. Foreign students in the United States on an F-1 visa can gain work only part-time and on campus, making a change in visa necessary for other types of employment.

Temporary employment for foreign students or other foreign workers requires an H-2B visa. Potential employers and foreign students work together to secure these documents for legal employment.

Instructions

1. Your H-2B requires a current passport.

Keep your passport up-to-date. The U.S. Department of State requires that your passport remain valid for at least six months longer than your planned stay on your H-2B visa.

2. Check that your potential employer has received temporary foreign labor certification. All employers of H-2B employees must apply for this certification from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

3. Ask your employer to complete the USCIS Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker. Once the petition is approved, you will need to note the I-129 petition receipt number for your interview.

4. Contact your embassy or consulate for an interview appointment. Depending on your country of origin, you may be subject to further requirements; your embassy will advise you on these requirements. Be prepared to pay your visa application processing fees at the time of your interview. Check the current fees online.

5. Complete Form DS-160, available online from the U.S. Department of State through Travel.State.Gov. After completing the form, print one copy for your records and one copy for your embassy interview.

6. Get your photograph taken. The photograph must meet the guidelines for visa photos and may be uploaded online. Check the DS-160 for instructions on photo uploads. Your visa will be issued upon review of all documentation.
