Use Internet Phones

Internet based phone services are an efficient way to bypass local telephone companies.

For those who use their phone lines infrequently enough where paying for monthly phone services is not worth the money, it might be a good idea to set up an internet phone. Some of the advantages of using an internet phone service include free calls to other users of that brand of service and the fact that international calls are inexpensive. Using an internet phone is easy to do, and once you learn the basics, you will be able to break free of old fashioned phone lines.

Instructions

1. Download and install the internet phone software of your choice. Internet phone providers often have a link on their official website providing the needed software along with specific instructions for additional help.

2. Install either a headset or compatible telephone device to your PC or phone adapter.

3. Connect to a high-speed DSL or cable internet connection. Your call quality often depends on the strength of the connection to the internet.

4. Select a service plan from your internet phone provider. Some plans are free, such as calls to other service users, while other calls may cost a certain amount per minute.

5. Open the software and input a telephone number. Treat the call like a landline telephone call. End the call by either hanging up the phone device in its cradle or pressing an "end call" button on the internet phone software.
