Connect To The Internet Through An Infrared Port

Connect to the Internet Through an Infrared Port

Infrared Data Association, or IrDA, refers to technologies involved in the transmission of data between electronic devices through infrared ports. If two IrDA devices, one with Internet access, are connected through their infrared ports, one device will be able to access the Internet through the other device. In this way, an Internet connection can be set up quickly for a computer through a cell phone with Internet access.

Instructions

1. If you haven't already, turn on your computer. Wait until all start-up programs fully load.

2. Plug your USB infrared adapter into one of the USB ports on your computer. Your computer will automatically detect the new hardware and attempt to install drivers. If your computer cannot automatically install drivers for your USB infrared adapter, download driver files manually from the manufacturer's website. If your hardware packaging includes a driver CD, use that to upload driver files.

3. Restart your computer to complete installation. Do not remove the USB infrared adapter.

4. Turn on your IrDA-compatible cell phone. Activate the phone's infrared port. Reference your cell phone's owner's manual if you are unsure of activate the infrared port.

5. Place the cell phone next to the USB infrared adapter. Make sure that the cell phone's infrared port is directly facing the infrared port on the USB adapter, at a distance of no more than three inches.

6. Establish a dial-up Internet connection through the infrared port with the standard network connections program on your computer. In Windows, Network Connections can be accessed through the Control Panel. In Mac OSX, Network Connections are accessible through System Preferences, found in the Apple menu. The infrared connection will be established through one of the COM ports in Network Connections.
