Nikon D300 Write To Disk Error

Compact flash cards contribute to Nikon D300 disk write errors.

A disk write error can strike at the most inopportune time, usually while capturing a perfect frame. Such a fault is displayed as a CHR error on the Nikon D300's control panel and is the result of a problem with the compact flash card. Performing troubleshooting steps on the compact flash card takes just a few seconds.

Nikon Compatible Compact Flash Cards

Frequent CHR errors may mean that the compact flash card is not compatible with the camera. While a wide variety of cards may seem to work, they may not be performing optimally and could even cause data corruption. Check the D300 User Manual for Nikon-approved cards.

Flash Card Contacts

The copper slots on a compact flash card enable it to send and receive photo information. If the contacts become damaged or dirty, a CHR error may occur. Remove the card and inspect the contacts. If they are not damaged, clean them with a soft cloth and reinsert the card firmly.

Compact Flash Card Corruption

A compact flash card could become corrupt due to sudden camera shutdown, interrupted read/write operation or if the camera sustains physical damage. In this case, you may need to format the card. If you have not already done so, create a backup copy of your photos and then format the flash card as directed in the D300 User's Manual.

Camera Reset

Try a new compact flash card. If the CHR error continues with the new card, then the problem may be with the camera. It may need to be reset. On the D300, simply press the "QUAL" and "+/-" buttons simultaneously for more than two seconds. This will restore the camera's default settings.
