The Samsung SHG-M140 is a basic GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) phone, but there are several passwords connected to the phone's various features. The options for resetting the password vary depending on the function. Depending on the password's function, you may need to contact your cellular carrier or even reset the entire phone.
Voice Mail Passwords
The voice mail password is controlled by your cellular carrier. Many carriers give you the option of resetting the password through your account on the carrier's website. If you do not have access to the Internet, contact your cellular carrier's customer care number. You can reach most carriers by dialing "611" on your M140. Listen to the prompts in the menu. If there isn't an option to reset your voice mail password, select the option to speak with a technical support or customer care agent. Confirm your account information with the representative and ask him or her to reset the password for you.
SIM PIN Password
A SIM PIN is a password on the SIM card. Most carriers leave this option disabled by default, but it is possible to activate it through the phone's security menu. When you remove the SIM card and install a different card, the phone prompts you to enter the PIN code. If you enter the PIN code wrong three times, the phone will prompt you for a PIN unlocking key, or PUK code. To reset this code, you must contact your cellular carrier. Do not keep entering codes after the phone prompts for a PUK. If you enter the PUK wrong too many times, the card will lock permanently and you will need to purchase a new SIM card.
SIM Unlock Passwords
If you purchased your SGH-M140 directly from a cellular carrier, the carrier may have set up a password on the phone that prevents you from installing a different carrier's SIM card. The carrier will have a record of the SIM lock password. The easiest way to get the password is to contact the carrier's technical support department and ask. Most carriers will give you the password if your account meets certain criteria. The criteria varies by carrier, but usually involves having the account active and in good standing for a certain length of time. If the carrier will not give you the password, there is another option. The password is based on the phone's IMEI number. Companies that specialize in unlocking phones can decrypt the password. Dial "*#06#" to display the IMEI number.
Handset Passwords
The SGH-M140 allows you to enter a security password that prompts you to enter the code when you turn the phone on. It also requires you to enter the password to access the security screen. If you have forgotten this password, the only way to reset it is to perform a hard reset on the phone. A hard reset is also known as a factory reset or master reset. It wipes clean all of the data on the device, so only use this option if there is no other choice. Dial "*2767*3855#" on the keypad to reset the phone.
