Connect A Laptop To 3g

Connect a Laptop to 3G

The rollout of 3G broadband networks by cellular carriers has made it possible to access the Internet from locations that used to have no coverage. While many users access the networks from their cell phones, others enjoy the convenience of using a laptop. This method requires having a mobile broadband data plan from the carrier and the use of a compatible 3G USB modem.

Instructions

1. Insert the SIM card into the USB modem, if your carrier requires it. Carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile use SIM cards-a small, fingernail-sized card that contains your personal cellular information. Remove the plastic cap from the modem and insert the SIM card into the slot until it clicks into place. Replace the cap.

2. Turn on the laptop. Insert the USB modem into an open USB port on the laptop.

3. Install the software by using the automatic installation wizard. The wizard should start once the laptop recognizes the presence of the new modem. Follow the prompts, accept the license agreement and click "Install" until a window tells you that the installation is completed. Restart the laptop if prompted.

4. Connect to 3G with the USB modem by opening the software program that it installed. This can usually be found as a shortcut on the desktop or by opening the Start menu, clicking on "All Programs" and looking for an application that has the name of your wireless carrier in it. Look for an option to "Connect." Choose this to activate the connection.

5. Open a web browser to test the modem.
