BlackBerry phones are PDA phones made for most phone carriers. The phone functionality is based on software. This software operates the programs and features in the phone. Updating that software brings new programs and features to the phone so updating each time a new operating system is introduced by the company is recommended. Updating is free, but requires using a personal computer to download the upgrade and transfer it to the handset.
Instructions
1. Download the desktop manager onto the PC. The software is on a disc that comes with the BlackBerry handset.
2. Download the handset software update from the BlackBerry home page. When new upgrades are available, BlackBerry makes the update available from its home page. (See Resources.)
3. Plug the USB cord into the BlackBerry and into the computer. The phone might ask for permission to make changes. Allow the changes.
4. Back up data on the phone when prompted from the desktop software wizard. Next, the installation wizard should walk you through a new software installation. If the installation does not immediately begin double-click the Blackberry Desktop Manger and then double-click "Application Loader." The updated software will appear as a choice on the next menu; select it and then select "Next." Press "Next" again on the following window and finally select "Finish" to close the window after installation.
5. Unplug and restart the phone after the software update downloads completely.
