Unlock An At&T Phone

If you bought your phone through AT&T, you will probably need an unlocking code to use the service and SIM card of another provider such as Sprint or Verizon. An unlocked phone also lets you use cheaper providers when traveling in other countries, assuming your phone is equipped for international use.

Instructions

Unlocking an AT&T Phone

1. Open your phone and get the IMEI number. This number is usually under the battery, printed directly on the phone. You might also be able to get it by pressing *#06# on your phone keypad.

2. Call AT&T. If you have been a customer in good standing for 90 days or more, AT&T may be willing to provide unlocking instructions and the unlocking code for your phone. This is the cheapest and easiest way to unlock your AT&T phone.

3. If you cannot get the unlocking code from AT&T, take your phone to a cell phone retailer with unlocking software. Call several multi-brand retailers and ask about unlocking. If they do not do it, they will usually refer you to someone who can.

4. Unlock your phone on the Web. Many sites will provide an unlocking code for a fee. Visit such a site, input the IMEI number, pay by PayPal, debit or credit card and wait for the code. (It can take up to 48 hours to receive.) Once you receive the code and follow the instructions, unlocking is instantaneous.

5. Find a free unlocking code on-line. Searching various forums may provide a viable unlocking code for your device. See the resources section for a link to a free unlocking code bulletin board.

6. Download unlocking software. You may be able to unlock your phone (depending on the model) with a cable and free unlocking software. Be sure to check out the software download page and documentation to see if your phone model is supported.
