The Xbox game console has a built-in hard drive that can quickly become filled. However, replacing the hard drive with a larger model will cause an "Error code 5" to appear on the Xbox's screen, as the replacement drive is not "locked" into the game console's operating system as the original drive was. Fortunately, you can repair the replacement hard drive so it doesn't cause an Error code 5 by modifying (or "modding") the Xbox with a computer chip from a game console modding supply house. While this will void the Microsoft warranty, the addition of the modding computer chip will eliminate the Error code 5.
Instructions
Modifying the Xbox
1. Put a bath towel down on a table. Remove all of the cables from the Xbox. Put the Xbox face down on the bath towel.
2. Lift off the rubber feet on the bottom of the Xbox with the tip of the utility knife. Scratch off the stickers on the bottom of the Xbox with the tip of the utility knife.
3. Remove the screws from beneath the rubber feet with the Torx screwdriver. Remove the screws from beneath the stickers with the Torx screwdriver. Turn the Xbox face up on the bath towel.
4. Lift up on the sides of the Xbox with your hands to remove the outer shell. Place the outer shell aside.
5. Remove the screws from around the DVD drive with the Philips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift up on the DVD drive with your hands. Pull the two plugs from out of the back of the DVD drive with your hands. Place the DVD drive aside.
6. Remove the screws from around the hard drive with the Philips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift up on the hard drive with your hands. Pull the two plugs from out of the back of the hard drive with your hands. Place the hard drive aside.
7. Release the clips on each side of the metal grill heat sink that is to the right of where the metal bracket was using the tip of the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.
8. Pull the metal grill heat sink off with your fingers.
9. Using compressed air, blow off the computer chips now revealed by removing the metal grill heat sink.
10. Position the pin header frame of the computer chip onto the top of the CPU chip so that the pins of the pin header frame line up with the pins of the CPU chip--the CPU chip is the smaller of the two chips that are now revealed.
11. Heat up the soldering iron. Solder the pins of the pin header frame to the computer chip. Let the solder cool for four or five minutes.
12. Plug the modding computer chip into the pin header frame using your fingers. Push down on the modding computer chip to ensure a tight fit.
13. Solder the end of the wire attached to the modding computer chip into the small hole to the right of the CPU chip on the Xbox motherboard--the small hole has "dO" labeled next to it. Let the solder cool for a minute.
14. Blow off the CPU chip with compressed air. Put the metal grill heat sink back over the computer chips. Re-engage the clips on each side of the metal grill heat sink using the tip of the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.
15. Plug the two cables from the Xbox motherboard back into the back of the hard drive. Put the hard drive back into position on the Xbox. Reattach the screws.
