Nokia introduced the 8800 Sirocco edition mobile phone in 2006. It was a slightly updated version of the original Nokia 8800, a "luxury" mobile phone first introduced in 2005. The 8800 Sirocco edition remains notable because of its sleek and sturdy build quality and its advanced feature set and specifications. Nokia has since discontinued the 8800 Sirocco edition.
Identification
The 8800 Sirocco edition measured 4.21 inches long, 1.77 inches wide and 0.69 inches thick at its thickest point. It weighed 4.87 ounces before optional upgrades and accessories. On-board power came via a removable, rechargeable 700-mAh lithium-ion battery that provided the 8800 Sirocco with up to 240 hours of standby time. The phone came housed in a scratch-resistant stainless steel chassis available in silver or black. Nokia also released a 24-carat gold-plated version of the 8800 Sirocco. The phone came with a one-year warranty from Nokia.
Display and Multimedia
The 8800 Sirocco featured a glass-reinforced 1.7-inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 208 by 208 pixels. The display had a scratch-resistant surface and displayed up to 256,000 colors. Nokia built a 2.0-megapixel digital camera into the back of the 8800 Sirocco. The camera featured QCIF video recording functionality and took photos at resolutions up to 1600 by 1200 pixels. The phone also had a built-in FM tuner as well as an integrated audio player compatible with MP3 and AAC audio file formats.
Cellular and Messaging
The Nokia 8800 Sirocco was a tri-band phone that featured compatibility with GSM networks at 850, 1,800 and 1,900 megahertz. The phone transmitted data over Class 8 GPRS and EDGE connections at speeds up to 236.8 kbps. Compatible messaging protocols included SMS, MMS and EMS. The phone also had instant messaging and mobile email functionality. Internet browsing was available via an included WAP 2.0 browser. The phone had Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP capability as well.
Additional Information
Nokia equipped the 8800 Sirocco edition with 128 MB of internal memory. The phone played back sound via either a built-in loudspeaker or the phone's 2.5-mm headphone output jack. Additional features included Java MIDP compatibility, voice-activated dialing, predictive text input, a built-in organizer, vibrating alert, a polyphonic ringer and a ring tone composer. At the time of its release, the 8800 Sirocco was the most expensive phone manufactured by Nokia.
