Definition Of Wifi Cell Phones

Some cell phones are capable of connecting to multiple types of networks. Wi-Fi cell phones are those that can connect to two different kinds of voice data networks to make and receive calls. Such phones improve phone reception and reduce dropped calls.

History

Wi-Fi cell phone technology is derived from VoIP (voice over internet protocol) technology, such as Skype, that allows users to make free calls over their internet connection. Many cell phones have Wi-Fi capabilities allowing them to connect to the internet to browse websites and download applications.

Features

The primary feature of Wi-Fi cell phones that differentiates them from standard cell phones is their ability to make and receive phone calls on both standard cellular networks as well as wireless LAN (local area networks). These phones take advantage of VoIP technology, allowing them to connect over a traditional computer network.

Significance

Wi-Fi phones can continue to receive and transmit voice data even when a cellular network is unavailable. As long as an open wireless network is available, the phone switches to VoIP seamlessly. For example, this feature allows a user to continue a phone call when walking from an outside area into a building that may not have cellular reception.

Geography

In urban areas there can be considerable radio frequency interference from thousands of mobile devices as well as from steel and metal structures. This can result in dropped calls as cellular network signals become blocked or distorted. Wi-Fi phones take advantage of the widely available Wi-Fi internet networks in urban areas to compensate for the impact of radio signals and interference in these dense areas.

Misconceptions

A Wi-Fi cell phone is defined as being a cellular handset that can automatically switch between cellular networks and wireless networks even in the middle of a phone call.

While many handsets do have wireless built into them, many are unable to make voice calls over this connection. Therefore, handsets with Wi-Fi built in for web browsing are not considered Wi-Fi cell phones unless they can make calls over the connection.
