Apple's second-generation iPhone 3G, released in 2008, and Nokia's E90 Communicator, released in 2007, are smartphones that offer similar features, such as digital cameras, GPS applications and multiple-network functionality. However, the phones also have several differences, including dimensions, design, battery life and operating systems, which should be taken into consideration when deciding which is a better fit for your situation.
Design and Dimensions
The iPhone 3G does not contain any flip or slide-out features and offers all of its data input options on-screen. The Nokia E90 Communicator, on the other hand, is flip phone that features an external screen and numeric keypad and a full QWERTY keyboard and main screen on the device's flip interior section. The iPhone 3G measures 4.5 inches long, 2.4 inches wide and 0.5 inch deep, while the E90 Communicator is 5.2 inches long, 2.2 inches wide and 0.8 inch deep. At 7.4 oz., the Communicator is heavier than the iPhone 3G, which weighs 4.7 oz.
Display Screens
The iPhone 3G features a 3.5-inch thin-film transistor capacitive touch screen that displays more than 16 million colors at 320-by-480 pixels of resolution. The E90 Communicator's primary TFT screen measures 4 inches and displays more than 16 million colors at 800-by-352 pixels, while its 2-inch TFT exterior screen produces the same amount of colors at 240-by-320 pixels. The iPhone 3G's touch screen is designed to respond to the electromagnetism emitted by human flesh and will not respond to other types of stimuli, including styluses.
Battery Life and Internal Components
A standard lithium-ion battery provides the iPhone 3G with up to 10 hours of talk time and up to 300 hours, or 12.5 days, of standby time. The E90 Communicator's standard lithium-ion battery provides the phone with up to 5.8 hours of talk time and up to 336 hours, or 14 days, of standby time. Built on the Apple iPhone OS operating system, the iPhone 3G uses a 412 MHz ARM 11 processor, while the E90 Communicator, which is built on the Symbian OS v9.2 operating system, uses a 330 MHz ARM processor.
Cameras
The iPhone 3G features a 2-megapixel camera that takes still pictures at up to 1,600-by-1,200 pixels of resolution, but is not capable of recording video. The E90 Communicator is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera that captures still images at up to 2,048-by-1,536 pixels and is able to record video at 640-by-480 pixels. Several photographic features, including auto focus and digital zoom, give the E90 Communicator added photographic functionality. The only extra photographic feature on the iPhone 3G is geotagging, a process that embeds map and GPS coordinate data into each picture taken by the phone. The E90 does not come with this feature.
