It's unfortunately easy to damage the screen on T-Mobile's G1, otherwise known as the HTC Dream. Having a damaged LCD does not mean the phone itself is not functional. Purchase replacement screens from various places, and replace the LCD display yourself. The task is somewhat challenging and requires specialized tools, but it can be much less expensive than purchasing a new phone.
Instructions
1. Slide out the G1's keyboard, and pull the tab on the left side of the screen to pop the battery cover off of the back. Slide your fingers around the battery cover to remove it from the phone, and pull out the battery.
2. Lay the phone screen-down on the soft cloth.
3. Unscrew the back of the screen with the T5 screwdriver, starting with the screws closest to the keyboard. You may have to force the keyboard out farther than it sits open on its own to access the screws. Slide the safe-open tool between the backing and the sides of the screen. Run it around the back of the screen, and remove the backing. You may need to lightly twist the tool to get the backing to pop off the phone.
4. Gently pull the thermal tape off of the microphone connector wire. It is the only wire that extends onto metal plate. Use the safe-open tool to open the latch holding the wire to the metal plate. Turn the screen around until you find the connector still holding it all together. Use the safe-open tool to disconnect this connector. Pull off the LCD screen.
5. Put the replacement screen in place and snap in the screen connector. Gently push the microphone connector against the metal plate.
6. Place the backplate onto the back of the screen and press it into place. Screw it down with the screws. You may have to force the keyboard back to reach the screws closest to the keyboard. Slide in the keyboard, and use your G1's new screen.
