When you purchase a cell phone from a network carrier on contract, it is usually locked to that network. If you need to use a SIM card from a different network carrier, you must get the phone unlocked first. A number of pay sites provide Sony Ericsson unlock codes. After unlocking the handset successfully, you will see the message "SIM restriction off."
Instructions
1. Navigate to a website that offers unlock codes, such as GSM Liberty, Unlock All Cellular or Cell Corner (see Resources).
2. Select "Sony Ericsson" as the cell phone manufacturer on the website, then choose the particular model you have.
3. Select the network carrier the phone is currently operating on, such as AT&T or T-Mobile.
4. Enter your cell phone model's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number in the respective field on the website. An IMEI is a cell phone's unique serial number. You can find it out by pressing "*#06#" on your keypad. After submitting this information, the website will work out the fee for the unlock code based on the carrier and handset information you have provided.
5. Proceed to checkout and pay for the unlock code via credit card. You will also have to provide your email address, since the unlock code will be delivered to you via email in 24 to 48 hours.
6. Enter the unlock code into the phone as advised by the unlocking website. Each handset has a unique unlocking method. You will get the detailed instructions from the website you chose.
