Update A Samsung Omnia

The Samsung Omnia was released in 2008. The Omnia's software was made compatible with Vista and XP software systems. Omnia will not properly sync with later versions of Windows. To make the phone compatible so you can sync tasks, contacts and email, you must upgrade the computer and phone software. All data on the Omnia will be deleted during the upgrade process. Be sure that the upgraded version is compatible with your bit version of Windows (e.g., Windows 7-32 Bit).

Instructions

1. Install the latest version of Windows Mobile Device Center. This software is on the installation disc that came with the phone. It can also be downloaded from Microsoft (see Resource). If installing from CD, select the "Setup & Installation" option when prompted. Click "Install" when prompted, and "Done" when installation is complete. If downloading the software, click "Run" when prompted and the software will then install.

2. Click on the "Start" button on the computer desktop and open "Windows Mobile Device Center."

3. Connect the Samsung Omnia to the computer using the USB Data Cable. The computer will inform you that drivers for the device are being installed. Select the items you want to back up when prompted by Windows Mobile Device Center (e.g., Email, Tasks and Calendars). Follow the backup prompts. The software will inform you when all data has been backed up to Microsoft Outlook.

4. Close Windows Mobile Device Center, and any other programs that are currently open on the computer.

5. Go to the Samsung Omnia upgrade page (see Resource) and click to download the "SCH-i910 Vista/Windows 7 Upgrade Tool" and save it to the computer desktop.

6. Double-click on the "SCH-i910 Vista/Windows 7 Upgrade Tool" to start it.

7. Accept the terms and conditions and click "Next." Read over the "What You Need to Know" section and click "Continue."

8. Click "Continue" again to verify that data has been backed up. Click "Yes" to continue.

9. Select the "Control Panel" from the Start menu. Choose "Windows Mobile Device Center" and select "Mobile Device Settings." Select "Connection Settings." Make sure "Allow USB connections" is unchecked. Press "OK."

10. Insert the stylus into the "Reset" hole located next to the Power button on the top of the Samsung Omnia to reset the device.

11. Keep Omnia connected to the computer until you are informed that the upgrade is complete. Then select "Finish." Windows Mobile Device Center will then open on its own to re-sync your content.

12. Click on the "Control Panel" from the Start menu again. Select "Windows Mobile Device Center" and select "Mobile Device Settings." Choose "Connection Settings" and make sure "Allow USB connections" is checked. Press "OK."

13. Verify the update. Disconnect the phone from the computer. Hit the "Start" option on the phone. Select "Settings," and "System." Tap "Version" and the ROM version should show "S:i910.10 V.DC22.20961" or later.
